What Is an Extended Depth of Focus Lens?
An IOL (intraocular lens) is the artificial lens that replaces your eye’s natural lens during Cataract Surgery or Custom Lens Replacement.
The most basic option is a monofocal lens. It gives you sharp vision at one distance, usually far away. Everything else, including your computer screen and your phone, still requires readers.
An extended depth of focus lens, or EDOF, works differently. Instead of locking you into a single focal point, it stretches your range of clear vision outward from distance into the intermediate zone. That is where most of daily life actually happens: the dashboard, the laptop, the grocery shelf, the person sitting across the table from you.
The TECNIS PureSee™ delivers that extended range along with functional near vision for many everyday tasks. For a lot of patients, that means picking up readers occasionally instead of reaching for them constantly.
Why Is the Contrast Claim Such a Big Deal?
This is what makes the PureSee genuinely different from anything else in its category.
Contrast sensitivity is your ability to tell an object apart from its background. It is what lets you spot a curb in dim light, read a road sign in fog, or make out a face across a dark restaurant. Most people never think about contrast until it starts slipping.
Historically, lenses that gave patients a wider range of vision did it at some cost to contrast. That trade-off was consistent enough that the FDA required manufacturers to carry a warning about reduced contrast sensitivity in the lens labeling.
The TECNIS PureSee™ is the first and only FDA-approved EDOF lens in the United States without that warning. Johnson & Johnson’s clinical data showed it maintains contrast sensitivity comparable to a standard aspheric monofocal lens while still providing a meaningfully extended range of vision.

Will I See Halos or Glare at Night?
This is one of the most common questions patients ask about premium lenses, and it is a fair one to ask.
Many premium IOLs use a diffractive design, meaning microscopic rings on the lens surface split incoming light between focal points. The design works, but splitting light is also what can create the rings and halos some patients notice around headlights after dark.
The TECNIS PureSee™ uses a purely refractive design instead. There are no diffractive rings dividing the light, which is a major reason its night vision performance holds up the way it does.
In Johnson & Johnson’s clinical study, 97% of patients reported no bothersome visual disturbances such as halos or glare. That same 97% said they would recommend the lens to a friend or family member.
For patients who drive at night for work, spend time on rural roads after dark, or have simply told us that night vision is their biggest concern, this lens is often a strong fit.
