Bill: I had glasses, well, contacts that NASA called me up on a regular basis because they needed to track the Hubble, and they knew that mine could do that. That was a replacement lens. It was that bad. Some people have bad hair day. I had bad eye days.
I was more than happy to try LASIK. I didn’t think it was possible. I really didn’t. I came in, and they said, “Yeah. It’s … Absolutely. When do you want to set it up?”. This is great. Are you kidding?
I was a little nervous. Any time you have a situation where you’re going to do something a little bit different, a little newer…I was probably more curious than anything else as to just how it would take on my eyes, but they put me at ease. They said, “Nah. Nah. You’re going to do fine. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be over before you know it. We’re going to go in. We’re going to do it.” And they did.
We were driving to church one morning on Sunday, and I almost stopped the car because I thought, “I don’t want this to end because everything is so sharp here in the neighborhood. I’m seeing signs, you know, street signs. It was like a projector back in the old days when you’d get that in focus and it was like, ‘Man, stop right there. That’s where I want it.'”
You have an incredible life ahead of you, and you need to see it in the sharpest focus imaginable and this is how you get to that point. You can wear glasses that’ll do that or you could put goggles, contacts. But nothing beats the fact of you on your own seeing everything in the focus that it should be, sharp as a tack. Once you see the results, you know that you made the right decision.
