Procedure & Recovery
The entire KAMRA™ inlay procedure from start to finish only takes about 20 minutes and is quite an easy process. You will remain awake for the entire duration, but don’t worry! You will receive some medication to help you relax, and numbing drops are placed in your eyes to ensure your comfort during treatment. You will then lie on your back and simply focus on a light above your eye. At ClearSight, we use the Ziemer LDV Z6 laser to create a small pocket in the front of your eye, called the cornea, where the KAMRA™ inlay will be placed. You may feel some slight pressure during this process but, otherwise, no pain. The laser treatment only lasts a few seconds.
After the pocket is created, your surgeon will then place the inlay into the opening, centered along your visual pathway. The pocket surrounding the inlay will then heal quickly and naturally. The procedure is only performed in one eye, your non-dominant eye. The other eye will be left untouched. Following surgery, both of your eyes will work together to provide a full range of vision from near to far.
Because of the relaxing medication, you will need a friend or relative to drive you home after treatment. Once the numbing drops wear off, your eyes may feel a little irritated or scratchy and they may water and be light sensitive. This is a completely normal part of the healing process, and we will provide medications to help you manage these symptoms. The best thing you can do to reduce these symptoms and speed up your recovery is to go home immediately after treatment and rest for a few hours with your eyes closed.
Within 24 to 48 hours after treatment, you should be able to resume normal activities, including returning to work. Patients who have a combined PRK + KAMRA inlay treatment may experience a slightly longer recovery period, taking up to 4 or 5 days to resume normal activities. By the end of the first week following the procedure, many people begin to notice an improvement in their near vision. It is important to remember that the amount and pace of near vision improvement vary by individual. For some, the improvement is dramatic and more sudden. For most, the improvement occurs more gradually.
As with any eye surgery, healing is a process. Adhering to our recovery instructions is the best way to ensure both the fastest recovery and most optimal result. These include:
- Avoiding using your reading glasses
- Taking your medications as prescribed, including artificial tears
- Keeping your follow-up appointments
It is typical to experience some fluctuations in your vision in the first three to six months after surgery as your eyes completely recover. We will recommend some simple tips to help you achieve the maximum visual benefits of the KAMRA™ inlay procedure. The keys to success are to be patient with the recovery process and diligent in following our instructions.
Certain side effects may occur following the KAMRA™ inlay procedure. Dry eye, glare, halos and vision disturbances at night are some common examples. These will likely resolve over time. Please keep us informed if you experience any of these or feel that your recovery is not progressing properly.
One major benefit of the KAMRA™ inlay procedure is that the inlay CAN be removed. While this is obviously not the intention of the procedure, patients find it reassuring to know that the treatment is reversible, and your vision can be restored back to its pre-KAMRA™ state.
